MONDAY OCTOBER 24TH
Well, today we decided to go to NOKOGIRI-YAMA,
on the coastline in South Chiba. The first thing we noticed was
this massive statue of the buddha Daibutsu. It was built in 1783,
and is 28 metres tall.
This area is the oldest place of worship
in the Kanto area, and was created 1, 300 years ago by Imperial
order of the Emporer Shomu and Empress Komyo (well, thats what the
pamphlet says anyway !) |
| But before we could have a stomp around the
area, we decided to sit her and eat some lunch. There were so many
Peregrine Falcons. There were even signs up saying that you should
be careful, as the hawks will steal your sandwiches ! |

It took about 20 minutes to walk up the
steep steps to the observatory area. The cliffs were massive ! Very
scary !
I just kept thinking, if there is a big
earthquake now, we are toast ! |
But then I saw this old couple (must be
in there seventies atleast) leaning over the rails and having a
look down at the enormous drop..........it made me realise what
a big girl I am when it comes to heights !
You probably can't see the old couple with
this photo being so small. Can you see someone standing just to
the left of that bush near the end of the rail ? |
 |
 |
But it was worth the walk up to the top just
to see a view like this. |
| Me and Koo decided to have a breather...... |
 |
|
Then on the way down we came across this
massive cliff carving of a buddha. Very impressive ! |
| You can see how big it was, by how small
Mami and Koo look in comparison. |
 |
|
There were loads of statues scattered around
the place. I liked this one - an old guy sitting under a tree taking
a moment to contemplate.......... |
| Stopped at this shrine on the way back to
the car. It seemed very old, and was set in beautiful surroundings. |
 |
 |
As the beach was nearby we thought it would
be rude not to let Koo have a run around on the beach. |
| Then it was time to head for home........... |
